"EPA's CARE program is about helping communities where there is a strong local commitment to identifying and solving environmental problems, and we certainly have that here in Pueblo."
- Art Palomares, Director, USEPA Environmental Justice Program, Region 8
Mission
PuebloCAREs (Community Action for a Renewed Environment) is dedicated to improving the health of our community through sustained community action aimed at reducing toxic environmental exposures.
PuebloCAREs (Community Action for a Renewed Environment) is a local partnership of twenty community groups, and is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It is a project of the non-profit Citizens for Clean Air in Pueblo for Education, Research and Action (CCAP-ERA).
We work to educate the public on ways to reduce exposure to indoor radon gas, mold, lead paint and dust, and hazardous household chemicals.
History
PuebloCAREs spent two years identifying toxic exposures in Pueblo and ranking them according to risk. This was funded by a U. S. EPA Level 1 CARE grant.
The top four risks (radon, mold, lead, and hazardous household chemicals), were chosen to be the focus of the current level II grant from the EPA. In 2009 Pueblo was one of nine communities across the nation to receive a Level II CARE grant to address community identified environmental health issues.
